Red 5 Akadora Trivia
Red 5's are well known to be a distinguishing feature of Riichi Mahjong. Some sources say akadora were introduced in the form of 2 red 5-pin tiles as a way to promote the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Between the 70's and now, the usage of red 5's has evolved from an unusual variant a common standard.
Rulesets using 4 Red 5's is less common now but have seen play various games: In the arcade game Mahjong Fight Club (2002), Tenhou (Up until 2007), Yakuza Kiwami (2016). Some mahjong parlors will use more than 3 red 5's as well, along with red 3's, 7's, blue gold, and platinum dora!
